Protect Canada’s public services

Join the fight to protect Canada's public services.

Public services make Canada the country it is.

Public services are one of Canada’s greatest resources. They help people access benefits, keep our food safe, protect communities, and respond when disaster strikes. Behind these services are dedicated public service workers in every community across the country.

Instead of investing in these vital resources, Prime Minister Carney and his government are cutting the services that families and workers rely on and slashing the jobs of the workers that provide them. At a time when people are already stretched thin, public service cuts mean less support for our communities, more pressure on workers, and weaker services for everyone.

Public service cuts make life more expensive for everyone.

Public services help keep everyday costs down for people in Canada. Cutting these critical services will worsen the affordability crisis and increase the burden on workers and families.

When benefits and subsidies are delayed and harder to access, workers and families end up paying more out of pocket.

Cuts to public services hurt everyone. Wait times grow. Backlogs increase. Inspections are reduced. Support becomes harder to access. And when emergencies happen, response systems are stretched even further.

That means families wait longer for the support they need. Communities lose access to critical services. Small businesses face more uncertainty. And public service workers are left trying to do more with less while the federal government continues to tear services down.

What’s at stake when the government cuts public services?

Cuts to public services put people, communities, and our well-being at risk. Some of the areas already facing cuts include:

Food safety: Food inspectors work to ensure that what ends up on our tables is safe to eat. They protect us from unsafe products and widespread foodborne illnesses. Fewer food inspections increase the risk of unsafe products reaching stores and dinner tables.

Agriculture: Agricultural workers and farm researchers help ensure the sustainability of our crops and food supply. Cuts to agriculture programs and farm research threaten our food security and weaken critical support for farmers and rural communities.

Public health: Workers at Health Canada and in research institutions across the country respond to outbreaks, track emerging health threats, and help keep our communities healthy. When public health agencies are stretched thin, Canada is less able to track outbreaks and respond to new health threats.

Health products and medications: Reductions to the Health Products and Food Branch weaken the regulation process of pharmaceutical drugs and health products on our shelves. Cuts and delays in regulation can slow access to safe health products and life-saving treatments.

Emergency response and coordination: Public safety cuts at the Government Operations Centre weaken the round-the-clock coordination and support needed during national emergencies, reducing Canada’s ability to monitor, respond, and coordinate our response to natural disasters and national emergencies. Cuts to emergency preparedness, environmental protections, disaster response, and coordination weaken Canada’s ability to respond to wildfires and other climate emergencies.

This is what we’re fighting for.

We’re fighting to protect the public services people in Canada rely on every day – and the workers who deliver them. Strong public services touch every part of our lives. Here’s what we stand to lose when they’re underfunded, cut, or privatized:

Strong public services: From benefits to food safety to emergency response, people deserve services that are there when they need them.

Support for workers: Public service workers keep Canada running. They need resources, protections, and respect to deliver the services people  rely on.

Strong communities: In Canada, we take care of each other. Supporting public services is supporting growth in our communities. Public services are there for families welcoming a new child, for seniors relying on pensions, and for Indigenous, rural, and remote communities accessing the programs that keep people supported and connected.

A government that invests instead of cuts: In order to build a strong Canada, the government needs to invest in public services. Instead of cutting services and putting more pressure on workers and their families, the government must invest in the public services that keep Canada running.
