Public service workers keep Canada running

Every day, public service workers deliver the services that make our country work, with care and commitment to everyone who uses public services.

Public service workers ensure that our food and water is safe, help families secure vital services, support businesses and farmers, and respond to emergencies like wildfires. These are the people behind the services that people in Canada rely on.

Canada’s public services are at risk

Instead of being respected and supported, public service workers are facing job cuts.

Their right to fair bargaining is under threat. Their pensions and pay are at risk. And every cut to a public service job is a cut to the services that support people in Canada and their communities.

A strong public service means a stronger Canada. When we invest in public service workers, we strengthen the systems that people in Canada depend on every day.

How to build a strong public service

Retirement fairness: Firefighters, paramedics, border officers, and other frontline public safety workers deserve a dignified retirement after 25 years of service. These are high-risk, trauma-exposed roles – fairness through equitable retirement is long overdue.

Protecting jobs & public services: The federal government is slashing thousands of public service jobs, putting essential services at risk for millions of people. These cuts hit equity-seeking groups and rural communities hardest. We need a commitment to protect jobs, stop reckless cuts, and strengthen public services for workers and families.

Remote work: Remote work improves productivity, saves taxpayers money, and supports a diverse, accessible, and future-ready workforce. It has to be negotiated fairly, without a top-down, one-size-fits none mandate.

What’s at stake: The services you care about

Strong public services touch every part of our lives. Here’s what we stand to lose when they’re underfunded, cut, or privatized:

Timely benefits: When jobs are cut at Service Canada, families wait longer for child benefits, new parents for parental leave, seniors for pensions, and workers who need to access Employment Insurance.

Safe communities: Public service workers protect our coasts and borders, and ensure food and water safety.

Affordable living: Public service workers deliver programs like childcare, education, housing, health care, and pay equity that make life more affordable for everyone.

Environmental protection: Scientists and inspectors ensure our air, water, and food are safe. Less investment means more risk for our health and environment.

A strong public service is the foundation of a strong Canada. Investing in public service workers means safer communities, stronger institutions, and a better future for people in Canada.
